Located in the historic Weiskotten Hall, the Department of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) services SUNY Upstate Medical University’s faculty and students involved in research projects by providing training, assistance, and guidance on the proper methods, techniques, and unique biological needs of all species used. Renovations to the 4th floor of Weiskotten Hall will provide those that utilize the DLAR with upgraded laboratory spaces and animal holding areas that meet all regulatory requirements.

The Department of Laboratory Animal Resources also acts as a gateway to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) regarding ethical and regulatory requirements of using animals in research.

In addition to several general open lab spaces, researchers will now have access to state-of-the-art specialized laboratories including a Micro Lab, a Transgenic Frog Lab, and an Incubator/Tissue Culture Lab. Dedicated holding areas are available for several different types of animal species including rodents, aquatic, and avian animals. Several Aviation Research Labs are located adjacent to the avian holding areas for ease of research.

Several supply rooms are located throughout the Department for ease of access, including space for cold food storage, and animal cage storage and sterilization. Students will have access to five procedure rooms within the DLAR to carry out more intensive research procedures. Additionally, a Necropsy & Euthanasia area will be located on the 4th floor, providing space to continue study after the animal has passed.
