Designed to accelerate the next generation of fusion research, the Princeton Plasma Innovation Center (PPIC) is an 85,000-square-foot research and collaboration facility in Princeton, New Jersey, developed for the U.S. Department of Energy and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL). Replacing aging infrastructure, the new facility brings together advanced laboratories, collaborative workspaces, and public-facing environments to support scientific discovery, interdisciplinary partnerships, and global collaboration. More than a new building, the PPIC represents an investment in the future of fusion science, creating an environment designed to evolve alongside one of the world’s most promising clean energy technologies.

While the architecture establishes a modern gateway to the PPPL campus, the building’s success also depends on the technology experience within it. Today’s researchers work across disciplines, institutions, and continents, requiring spaces that support everything form informal discussions and data sharing to presentations, visualization, and global collaboration. The challenge was to create an environment where technology enhances these interactions while remaining intuitive, reliable, and adaptable for years to come.

Every space presented a unique set of requirements, yet every user needed a consistent experience. Whether working in a small collaboration room, hosting a large seminar, or engaging with partners around the world, researchers should be able to focus on advancing their work, not learning how to use the room around them. Achieving that balance required careful planning and close coordination across the project team.

BrightTree Studios partnered with the project team to develop an audiovisual, telecom, and security strategy that supports the building’s long-term mission. Rather than approaching each technology system independently, designers’ focus was on creating a connected ecosystem that enables people, information, and spaces to work together seamlessly. Every design decision was made with the user experience in mind while ensuring the infrastructure could adapt as research and technology continue to evolve.

The team collaborated closely with project stakeholders throughout the design process to coordinate technology with the building’s architecture and operational goals. Early planning allowed technology infrastructure to be thoughtfully integrated into the facility, supporting everything from day-to-day collaboration to formal presentations and public engagement without compromising the architectural vision.

Instead of designing technology around individual rooms, BrightTree developed a flexible foundation that supports the entire facility. Researchers can move effortlessly between spaces while experiencing the same intuitive functionality, regardless of the room’s size or purpose. Behind the scenes, scalable infrastructure allows the facility to accommodate new technologies and changing research priorities without significant disruption, helping protect the owner’s investment well into the future.

The technology strategy was designed to support the way research happens today while remaining prepared for how it will happen tomorrow. Collaboration spaces encourage the exchange of ideas, presentation environments simplify the sharing of complex information, and integrated communications enable researchers to connect with colleagues and partners across the globe. Although the Princeton Plasma Innovation Center is still under development, the design is already positioned to deliver lasting value.
