The Department of Veterans Affairs has launched plans to upgrade infrastructure at several Medical Centers across the country to prepare them for the implementation of an Electronic Health Record Management (EHRM) system. The Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Iowa City, IA consists of 10 buildings for a total of 500,000GSF and has undergone upgrades to align its existing infrastructure with the standards set by the National Office of Information and Technologies.
Telecommunications & security designs were provided to establish a fiber optic backbone throughout the medical campus and implemented redundant fiber pathways, added entrance rooms, and established dual pathways of multimode fiber to each telecommunications room. All existing Cat cabling was upgraded to Cat6A.
Improvements were also made to the existing electrical systems, which incorporated building management system interfaces, enhanced access control points, and modernized the main server room systems. To support the expanded technological requirements, a brand-new data center was designed to cater to the needs of the VAMC Iowa City campus.
