Virginia Tech
First Building, Innovation Campus

BrightTree Studios has teamed with internationally recognized architecture firm SmithGroup to design the first of three academic buildings to comprise Virginia Tech’s new $1B Innovation Campus.

The project comes as a response to Amazon.com, Inc.’s HQ2 buildout plan in Crystal City, which is located about two miles from the intended construction site. Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus is expected to drive economic growth in the region by attracting new industries, driving business start-ups, convening top academics across multiple disciplines, and producing extraordinary new talent. Such prospects are compelling for those looking to contribute to Northern Virginia’s next monumental leap toward becoming a global technology hub.

BrightTree Studios will provide cutting-edge technologies for the building, expected to open in 2024. The scope of BrightTree’s work includes audiovisual, IT/telecom, and security systems design.

The 300,000-square-foot building will house graduate-level computer science and computer engineering programs, supporting a variety of instruction, research, office, and support spaces, with a focus on experiential learning and multi-purpose spaces for collaboration, as well as testing labs and maker spaces.

According to Virginia Tech, the three buildings’ anticipated 1,000,000 square-feet will include “academic classrooms, incubator space for new startups and research and development, offices for industry collaboration, and convening space for alumni events,” facilitating collaboration, research, and discovery for tomorrow’s technology workforce.

We are proud to offer a bit of Pittsburgh ingenuity to Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus design team. As we continue to develop the university’s vision for this incredible building, we are thrilled to see how we can further our shared mission of engagement, transform the region, and set a new standard for world-class academic facilities.
