To accommodate for the accelerated growth within programs at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University has developed plans for a brand-new 250,000GSF building on the existing East Baltimore campus. This new facility will connect to the existing Wolfe Building, allowing for seamless use of both structures. Designs for the Bloomberg School of Public Health were inspired by the principles of transparency, connectivity, and sustainability and target a LEED Gold certification.
Each of the 10 departments located within the facility will have a distinct “neighborhood”, allowing for ease of connection within each discipline. The open design of the facility welcomes cross-departmental collaboration, featuring lounge areas, study hubs, and a kitchenette on each floor. The first floor of the building will be home to SOURCE, the community engagement and service-learning center for the Schools of Public Health, Nursing, and Medicine, and will have office spaces that are available to the public. The entrance plaza also serves as a convertible space, capable of hosting larger scale events.
Ushering in a new era of public health education, several broadcast studios & podcasting studios are located within the building. These facilities will allow students and researchers to create educational materials and learn more about public health announcements. All studios have designated control rooms, and several video editing work suites are available for use throughout the building.
An XR (Extended Reality) Studio is available within the building as well, giving students further access to immersive learning experiences. The XR Studio has dedicated spaces for equipment and general storage, as well as a Control Room that is connected to the main studio area. A “Live Talk” Studio and Course Capture Studio give faculty and staff the ability to strengthen their learning materials and lend their expertise in a live-studio setting.
Smart Classrooms outfitted for hybrid learning facilitate connections with colleagues from around the world. The School of Nursing will also have access to a state-of-the-art Behavioral Research Laboratory with adjoining breakout rooms for continued study. An Instructional Design Studio gives users the opportunity to brainstorm and create effective learning opportunities for the public.
