Johns Hopkins University has created an interdisciplinary academic building that supports interaction and high-level academic collaboration at the heart of its Washington D.C. campus. Spanning 435,000GSF, a convertible event space, video and audio recording studios, media innovation suite, and art gallery were designed with students, government leaders, and public service as the main focus. There are a number of programs that the Center has created, including the Public Innovation Research Collaborative, the Bloomberg Public Innovation Fellowship, the Summer Scholars program, Innovation Teams, and the Bloomberg Cities Network Hub.
Measures were taken to ensure that the technology designed in the building allows for ease between user and technology, enabling anyone to best utilize the spaces. Alongside classrooms, there are several collaboration areas placed throughout the building.
Given the location of the Bloomberg Center, extreme security measures were taken to ensure the safety of staff and the student body. With spaces open to the public and given the location, highly secure systems were implemented into the facility. Taking these necessities into account, our team incorporated over 365 video surveillance cameras throughout the facility, as well as over 400 card access points which tie into the greater JHU system.
Through world-class research, students have the ability to aid government leaders in finding effective solutions, developing research and programs for public innovation, and translating that knowledge into policy, training, and support for government leaders.
